Weekend DiscoveriesOver the weekend I came across two interesting acts. The first is Mikelango and The Black Sea Gentlemen. I kept hearing their song A Formidable Marinade on ABC radio over the weekend. Catchy, humourously macabre Eastern European folky stuff. Check out the tunes on their myspace page. The other artist is Australian guitarist Penny Ikinger. She was on Rockwiz last Saturday night. Here performance of Kathleen was spellbinding. The other guest was Aussie guitar hero Kevin Borich. The duet was the Stones Gimme Shelter and in hindsight it probably wasn’t the best pairing. Penny likes plenty of distortion and feedback to create noisey interludes; Kevin is more of the traditional bluesy pentatonic solo fiend and the combination seemed a little out of kilter. Still, though Penny did not seem all that into the show, her music is very interesting. As for Kevin, he holds a place in my guitarist heart as one of the first electric gitar songs I ever learned was one of his. Can’t remember the song but it had a great riff (I do remember the other two songs as being Alright Now by Free and Zep’s The Rover). |
