The working person’s muxtape

A themed muxtape with the songs relating to working in some form or another. Annotations over the fold, as you listen along. Oakley Hall - Confidence Man A live version from the Daytripper sessions and one of me favourite songs. Lyrically, a little desperate and strange and the line “maxing out my limit on the minimum wage” gets them a look in. Rhino Bucket - I Was Told These AC/DC riff-a-likes hit the target with this song. A song about a life of quiet desperation turning into resignation. It rocks but with a melancholy air. Bill Kirchen - Working Man I realized that I was missing out on all the great country working songs. But I found this modern day Kirchen tune is worthy of inclusion. ZZ Top - Just Got Paid Some greasy slide over a right funky beat. Lyrically “If you believe like workin hard all day, Just step in my shoes and take my pay” sums it all up. Steve Earle - What’s A Simple Man To do A confession. I was once an illegal immigrant in the land of the free. While the protaganist’s circumstances in this tale are far different from mine, the struggle to find work and survive in a new land resonates. The Riplets - We Work And then we rock. All you need to know. A reminder of the lost days when this was my life. Great fun. Too old for it all now. The Upper Crust - A Friend of a Friend of the Working Class Some are called to higher duties where “And though I never had to work an honest day myself ‘Cause since the day I was born I been rollin’ in wealth” but they understand our plight as “You get up in the morning to join the common herd Your lot is a hard one, or so I have heard.” Sympathetic rich blighters they are. But they do rock. AC/DC - Down Payment Blues Bon has great fun on this song about rock’n'roll welfare. One of those songs that is not well known outside the core AC/DC fan group but one that is a classic. Rose Tattoo - Scared For Life Angry effectively packs a whole heap of working class mythology into this one. A tale of a lad who had no choice in his destiny. Mississippi Fred McDowell - Levee Camp Blues Fred McDowell’s was a master of slide. His blues were often laidback but no less powerful with the droning slide creating a moody atmosphere. Songs about working the levee camps are a staple of the old bluesmen and a great example of such a work song.
