The Upper Crust - Let Them Eat Rock! How’s this for lazy blogging. A repost of something I did in my days as Ranty. One of my favourite bands and worthy first post in the ‘Best Band You Have Never Heard’ category. Last known gig from M’Lords was last year but I hope they are still active. Rock’n’roll has always been about how hard it is for the working class. Working Man Blues , Working For the Man , Working Class Man and 9 to 5 are all songs that capture the dreariness and drudgery of the daily grind. But what about the other side. What about what it is like to be the Man (or Woman)? The trials and tribulations of the ruling elite have been long neglected by rock’n’roll. And as the Howard government moves towards a new industrial relations regime it is best that we the workers become more understanding and tolerant of the day to day difficulties faced by our employers. And I have the very band. From Boston, I bring you an artiste whose time has come, the lords of Rocque and Roll, The Upper Crust! Consisting of Jackie Kickassis (drums), Duc D’istortion (guitar), Count Bassie (bass) & Lord Bendover (guitar, vocals) The Upper Crust travel the length and breadth of the New Colonies on a semi-regular basis, dressed in their finest wigs, powder and tights bringing rocque and roll to the unruly rabble. Their lyrics chronicle the lives of the rich and decadent giving us an insight into how difficult it really is to be 18th century aristocrats. So far four albums, Let Them Eat Rock, The Decline and Fall of The Upper Crust, Entitled and Once More Into The Breeches have been released over the past 10 years. Yes, they are a band with a gimmick (think foppish 18th century aristocrats fronting AC/DC) but it is a consistently good gimmick. The music is cast from the same mould as Bon Scott era AC/DC but the lyrics which deal explicitly with the upper class problems of love, luncheons, matrons, finishing school and finding one’s ascot ‘n’ one’s dickie are quite clever. And the songs show how hard it is at the top with all the balls to go to, luncheons, etiquette to negotiate, chaperones to dodge, playing badminton and finding an object of desire in turns finds you persona non grata. But do not fear. As revealed in the song Let Them Eat Rock (mp3 link) the Upper Crust do sympathize with the hungry and homeless: I myself have felt a pang of hunger, but I know about one thing worse And that’s the way I feel after a twelve course meal when I feel like I’m about to burst Let Them Eat Rock But it is not for us, the great unwashed, to seek their favours. As stated in the song Highfalutin : I’m lording it over you, I’m lording it over you I got divine right to rock’n'roll all night, I said baby I was born to rule In deference we rock.
