The Right Approach to Bootlegs

Both Metallica and Pearl Jam have websites where fans can, for a modest fee, download FLAC or mp3 versions of recent and past concerts (respective sites are here and here). While both bands have a history of allowing tapers at shows, this is great idea that other bands could, and should, follow. The recorded shows are usually of soundboard quality. The idea of releasing the shows onto the internet is not to discourage trading. Quite the opposite. They understand the hardcore fans and also know that this is a great way to bring new fans into the fold. I fervently hope that more bands adopt such an approach and open their vaults and also release recent shows on the internet. The siege mentality and sheer ineptitude of the major labels in regard to the internet doesn't bode well but we can hope.
