The forgotten member of Led ZepI came across an article in The New Republic that attempts to assess the legacy of Led Zeppelin. There are some intriguing points but David Browne fails miserably in that he all but excludes John Paul Jones as being part of the group. It seems that Zep’s musical muscle was built entirely by Plant, Page and Bonham. Jones was an integral member of the band and equally responsible for shaping Zep’s sound. Black Dog was the result of Jones and Kashmir would not be the same without the string like arrangements. As Jones himself said in an interview: Well then, I don’t have that much of an image in a way. To a lot of people, my image tends to be from a musical point of view. “Led Zeppelin, Page and Plant… Led Zeppelin and John Paul Jones… Yeah, yeah, that guy is some bass player.” For people who do seem to know about me, they say I had a lot to do with the music. A lot of people say, “I always thought you had a lot to do with the music.” (Laughs) Then they hear the record and go, “Oh you did have lot to do the music, didn’t you?” Again, it’s nice, but it’s not by design, you know. Somebody else said after the last Diamanda Galas, “Don’t you think this is Led Zeppelin influenced?” And I just said, “Don’t you think Led Zeppelin has a John Paul Jones influence?” I was a quarter of that band. The Diamanda Galas album referenced is This Sporting Life. Which I do recommend as a fine album. |
