A Dylanistic convergence of coincidence

I like to have boots of shows I’ve been to. I’ve only scored two. One is AC/DC at the Syd Ent Cent back in 2001 and the other is PJ Harvey at the Enmore in 2003. Other than that it has been slim pickings. Back in 1994, I saw his Bobness when living in Japan. [...]

Jeff Lang Tour Dates

Jeff Lang’s Aussie tour dates are up at his site. I’ll be fer shure at the Ettalong gig (booked tickets ages ago). Sydney types would want to get to the Basement gig on May 31st. Jeff’s new album is Half Seas Over out on April 26th. On the tour, a lucky few may get to also [...]

Diamanda Galas does the Bolt

A month or so ago in Melbourne, I was minding by business and biding my time over a pint or two and reading the Herald Sun. Casually reading a column, I was momentarily dumbstruck by a paragraph of concentrated stupidity. Sure enough checking the byline, it was by Andrew Bolt. Cut to today’s SMH and they [...]

Monkin’ around

I stumbled onto The Monks via some thread on Fark. They were a 60s group that twisted the conventions of the time that sorta sounds familiar but with a wicked, twisted edge. Check out the following vid Monk Chant. You have jungle drums, fuzz bass, blackboard nail dragging organ solo, a communal tapping, proto-feedback guitar solo, [...]

AC/DC Rumour #seven hundred and sumthin’ sumthin’

Here we go again. But at least this one refers to Australia. The lads are supposed to be playing Suncorp later in the year. One day, I’ll stumble on the right one and y’all hail me as a rock’n'roll prophet (after I delete all the failed predictions of course).

A Quieter Riot

Learned today that Kevin Dubrow, the singer from 80s metal band Quiet Riot, died earlier today. Best remembered for the Slade cover, Cum On Feel the Noize, Quiet Riot really broke metal in the mainstream back in 1983. Depending on how you feel they should be congratulated or condemned for the rise of 80s hair metal. [...]

A Choir Reality Show

I just saw this announcement at NBC’s website. This is definitely a first — kind of American Idol meets Ward Choir. CLASH OF THE CHOIRS Two-Hour Premiere, Monday, December 17 ( 8/7c ) , then airing Tuesday, December 18 ( 8/7c ), Wednesday, December 19 ( Special Two-Hours, 8 /7c ) with the final competition on Thursday, [...]

Because Zoe asked… Not really that Hannah is a problem though the 3:00am till 5:30am shift this morning was tiring. Though I did get to watch some cricket and found out that Foxtel programs really crappy movies in the wee hours.

Wasted Sleepless Nights

Last year I had a go at a certain ignorant elitist music journo regarding comments made about The Angels greatest hits package Wasted Sleepless Nights. The other day I picked up the compilation on the cheap and listening to it only reinforces my view that The Angels deservedly one of Australia’s greatest rock bands. The trouble [...]

Friday Night Bootleg - The Dictators Two Tub Man

For the penultimate Friday Night Bootleg of the year some New York proto-punk. The Dictators, lead by Handsome Dick Manitoba, headed up some of the initial forays into punk in the US influenced by the MC5 and The Stooges. At one stage The Dictators and AC/DC toured together and you can hear that they would [...]

ABC’s My Favourite Album. The Snarky Review

Well it is done. The ABC has released the results of a nationwide survey for Australia’s favourite album. The top 10 abums are: Pink Floyd — Dark Side Of The Moon One of my best mates will be happy but that is not enough for me. I’m over this one though evidently a lot of ABC viewers [...]

Abide with Me at Ward Conference

Last week we sang David Naylor’s arrangement of Abide with Me at our Ward Conference. The a’capella verse (second) has some nice harmonies that are a little adventurous without pushing the boundaries. We had a great turnout for the performance and I was quite pleased with how it sounded. If we could just get that [...]

iTunes 7.0 Upgrade Fiasco

Reports are that iTunes 7.0 is a dog. I can attest to that as I upgraded last night and ended up with awful, scratchy sound quality. Haven’t tried a fix yet but I’d advise against upgarding for the time being. iTunes hasn’t ruined my life as some have reported. I went back to Winamp.
