Supagroup: Rock music now with less ironyMusic has that affect on people. For the philosophical acoustic genius John Fahey, Bluegrass Music Destroyed his life (a book that is bloody hard to find. Will have another go via a UK bookstore I discovered via a comment at Road to Surfdom). For rockers Supagroup it was rock’n'roll that had an adverse affect on the journey around the sun. And thank god for that. A New Orleans band that has been around for some years they rock hard. I discovered them while looking at some Upper Crust tour dates. I wondered and then listened and I’m hooked. One of the worst afflictions visited on rock over the past decade or so is “irony.” For some reason, there is a mindset that you can’t simply rock out and have a good time anymore. Unless you are being ‘ironic’ and therefore not really having a good time. That is ok because you are mocking rock’n'roll conventions. But if you enjoy actually start to enjoy playing rock’n'roll then your indie cred is out the window. Supagroup understand that rock’n'roll is stupid at times. And even as they are aware of the silliness of it all, they revel in it for above all it is fun. There is an element in rock crit that only sees bands or artists who say “big important things” as being worthy. Bugger that. What party would you like to be at? One where everyone sits around trying to outdo each other by spouting off self-important inanities about Radiohead or one where the Supagroup mantra ‘Let’s Go Get Wasted’ is liberally applied? You can download a mp3 of Let’s Go (Get Wasted) from their website or check out their myspace page. And because they name drop Bon Scott, I’ve uploaded a mp3 of Rock and Roll Tried to Ruin My Life to help with your weekend bachnallian activies. |
