Sacred SteelI ain't a religious man. But if I had to get down on my knees and pray I wouldn't be praying in no dreary manner that seems to afflict most churches. I'd rather be testifying in rambunctious church full of people testifying the gospel via music. And not that insipid, overfawning, self-important, milquetoast music you get at the McHillsong churches. Something like the music that sprung up in the House of God, Keith Dominion pentecostal churches. And the unusual nature of the music is that it is based around the sound of pedal steel guitars. From A Brief History of the House of God Steel Guitar Tradition: The steel guitar is usually identified with country or Hawaiian music. Pedal-steel guitars are routinely found in contemporary white country gospel bands. In most African-American church services, however, the instrument is unheard of. In the House of God, Keith Dominion churches the steel guitar has reigned supreme for decades. The House of God is a Pentecostal church. Those sects are known for music-driven worship services in which the presence of the Holy Spirit is manifested by dancing and involuntary body movements. The House of God cites Psalms 150:4, "…praise him with stringed instruments…," and 149:3, "Let them praise his name in the dance," as scriptural support for the music and Holy dancing. Worship services are driven by music played by an ensemble which is led by a steel guitarist. The steel guitarist works closely with the minister to play a very important role in worship services. In addition to belting out driving "praise" or "shout" music, the steel guitarist provides dramatic emphasis for sermons and testimonies, accompanies singers, plays for offertory processions and aids in healing. The gospel music of the House of God, Keith Dominion gained some recognition when Arhoolie released Scared Steel. It is an amazing collection of gospel centering around the slide prowess of Sonny Treadway, Willie Eason Henry Nelson and others. It is outstanding music. It is indeed soulful as you would think. The musicianship is often outstanding. With my recent eMusic allotment I downloaded: Sacred Steel - Live! Recorded Live At The Second Sacred Steel Convention and Sacred Steel On Tour The Campbell Brothers have started to bring the House of God style to the masses. Chuck Campbell, raised on church music, discovered artists such as Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan and they have influenced his style. His playing is amazing at times but his instrument is always in service of the greater good. If you have never heard of this genre before go and get some today. You won't be disappointed. |
