Runnin’ With the Devil: The Unapologetic Van Halen HagiographyThis is Van Halen… As bands grow older, some call it quits after a one final cash raking tour and then regularly plod away in encore, reunion tours on golden oldies circuit trading on past glories. Other once great bands, like Van Halen, implode in personal acrinomy leaving fond memories and the desire for that one last show unfulfilled. In their prime Van Halen were one of the great rock bands. They ruled the word in the early 1980s. They were the template for 80s rock with Eddie Van Halen’s astounding fret board prowess and Diamond David Lee Roth’s big haired, showboating antics. Roth left in 1985 amidst a legendary clash of egos and was replaced by Sammy Hagar. Van Halen in effect became Van Hagar and while they rode the wave of commercial success for a number of years it just wasn’t the same. As Roth pointed out in his own inimitable fashion Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship. Roth continued on for a number of years (his first two solo albums Eat Em’ Smile and Skyscraper were great slabs of 80s rock) but gradually his solo career could not be sustained by himself alone. He was last seen putting his skill as a paramedic to the test on a DOA radio career. |
