From the very beginning it's important to incorporate improvisational practice into your musical studies, regardless if you have played your instrument for 10 weeks or 10 years! I was trained as a "legit" musician and through excellent instruction I developed solid fundamentals as a trumpet player. However, my confidence was shaken when it came to taking my first "improvised" jazz solo in high school stage band when the director said those ominous words: "Ok Marty take a solo..."
