Friday Night Bootleg - fIREHOSE Chemical Wires

fIREHOSE was one of the great and now largely forgotten post-punk bands of the late 80s. Comprising the two remaining members of the deservedly legendary Minutemen (Mike Watt and George Hurley), the formed when Minuteman, Ed Crawford, convinced Mike to start playing music again after the death of Minutemen singer/guitarist D. Boon. The Minutemen were famous for their short but straight to the point songs often devoid of conventional structure. fIREHOSE allowed things to stretch out just a little (some songs made three minutes) and while obviously influenced by the Minutemen still managed to hold their own style. On top of Mike Watt’s walking, inventive bass and Hurley’s skillful drumming, Ed Crawford’s almost rudimentary guitar and earnest vocals made for some interesting and rewarding listening. If you are an eMusic devotee, I suggest grabbing Ragin’, Full On. There is a story about how I got into fIREHOSE and a whole host of American post-punk in the early 90s. I’ll tell that one when I get a chance. For now, some music. fIREHOSE - Chemical Wires Santa Clara, CA 25/8/89
