eMusic Picks For JulyI just love it when my eMusic subscription refreshes. I keep checking my account every few hours on the day of refresh to see the number of downloads refresh back to 65. It is better than Christmas and comes 12 times a year. So ‘ere we go with this month’s picks. Heaven - Heaven A forgotten slab of classic 80s Aussie rock that has resurfaced. The lead vocalist, Alan Fryer, actually tried out for AC/DC after Bon died. All the great 80s metal cliches are here so a stomping, fun album to listen to. Includes In The Beginning. Steve Earle - Jerusalem The Revolution Starts…Now is a great album. I have been told (I think by Amanda) that Jerusalem is better. Can’t comment on that one just yet. Various Artists - Pachuco Boogie One of the best albums of last year was Ry Cooder’s Chavez Ravine. The album documented via music of the time (and original compositions) Mexican-American culture in LA during the 1950s framed with story of the building of Dodger Stadium by destroying a Latino community . Pachuco Boogie is a collection of latino boogie from LA recorded in the 40s and 50s and a compliment to Chavez Ravine and important historical document in its own right. I’ve already given this one a whirl and it is finger poppin’ delight of Chicano swing. Northern Mississippi Allstars - Shake Hands With Shorty Mississippi Hill Country blues is the great lost blues genre. Sadly it most important practitioners are gone. However the Northern Mississippi Allstars keep the flame burning. Absorbing the influences of Fred McDowell and RL Burnside they manage to update the sound without losing the spirit of the style. Only a cursory listen so far but sure enough sounds good. The Little Killers - The Little Killers Not sure how I stumbled onto this one (with eMusic you can follow influences and like sounding artists so quickly you have no idea what genre you started from) but I am glad I did. The eMusic description ‘inspired by rock and punk icons such as Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, and Johnny Thunders’ pretty much describes the sound. Fast, furious, relentless but very satisfying. |
