Does Rap Belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? That is the question after Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five were named in the next group of inductees into the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame. And the answer is why not? As rock’n'roll formed from a melange of styles, rap has been an influence on rock. The Chilli Peppers, Faith No More and Rage Against the Machine for example. Keen students of the Nineties will remember the Judgement Night soundtrack. And the there are the Beastie Boys. Given Miles Davis in included the breadth of influences on rock should be included. Other inductees are REM, Patti Smith, the Ronettes and Van Halen/Van Hagar. Most interest concerns Van Halen and if the band members will need to be seperated. AC/DC were inducted in 2003. It was sort bit like Grouch Marx violating his dictum of never joining a club that would have him as member but the band went along anyway. They tore the place up, especially fuelled with frustration by having to wait till The Edge finished his 40 minute induction speech for The Clash. |
