Jazz Improvisation - Secrets Part 1

From the very beginning it's important to incorporate improvisational practice into your musical studies, regardless if you have played your instrument for 10 weeks or 10 years! I was trained as a "legit" musician and through excellent instruction I developed solid fundamentals as a trumpet player. However, my confidence was shaken when it came to taking my first "improvised" jazz solo in high school stage band when the director said those ominous words: "Ok Marty take a solo..."

Yellowjackets - Lifecycle

Lifecycle was released on the Heads Up label and is the 20th release by this legendary band. Following in their format of improvisational music the band goes full circle, and after an absence of almost 15 years they bring back the sound of a jazz guitar to their mix through the musicianship of noted jazz and jazz-fusion guitarist, Mike Stern. Never at a loss for stretching the barrier of sound and style, on this release the band ventures out by infusing a bluesy sound to the mix through the addition of Mike.

Jazz Improvisation - Secrets Part 2

I'm about to reveal the most obvious yet probably most ignored jazz improvisation secret to "successful" jazz improvisation. What do I mean by successful? When you are able to sound like a pro jazz soloist, in that you are building your solo phrase upon phrase to a climax, using an assortment of articulations, intervals, and ideas.

Tech Knowledge

Digital technology has evolved to the point that musicians can easily produce and mix their own music at home. There are plenty of computer programs that supply you with more than enough tools to crank out your own mixes right from your computer desk. The problem is that even with this technology right at our fingertips, many producers lack a few simple nuggets of knowledge that could help them produce a high quality mix.

All Sliced Up

I can remember fast forwarding through my favorite hip-hop songs to that small portion of instrumental at the end with little or no vocals recorded against it. I would use this little portion of beat to my advantage. This is when I started splicing beats. Before I had a computer, before I had a deep machine, before I had a set of drums, I had double cassette boombox with an auxiliary in jack. One of the first beats I ever spliced was Black Moon's "Buck'em Down" joint.

Guitars - How Do They Differ?

Although there are several kinds of guitars the two main ones are the electric and the acoustic and even within these two categories there are many variations. The acoustic guitar is made of wood and the sound it produces depends upon the shape of the guitar and the strings. The body is usually hollow and nylon strings are used.

A Brief History of the Electric Guitar

Electric guitars became needed during the big band era in the 30s and 40s as jazz music orchestras; with large brass sections became larger and larger. The first electric guitars that were used were made of a hollow arch-top acoustic guitar body with electromagnetic transducers attached. Les Paul experimented with the idea of electric guitars by attaching microphones to a guitar.

'Our Love to Admire' by Interpol - Album Review

It's the classic dilemma that faces every band on the brink of 'the big time' (the proper big time, mind - Coldplay not Leon Jackson): make more of the same that's got you this far or dilute things to attract a broader audience and thus turn off all your original fans in the process. To sell out or not to sell out, that is (quite literally) the million-dollar question. So, with a new label no doubt rubbing their hand with anticipation, which way did Interpol go?

Pure Pitch Method Review

No singer or musician is complete without a good set of ears. As the saying goes "you can only sing & play as well as you can hear."

'Antidotes' by Foals - Album Review

For all the ubiquity of post-punk inspired bands flooding the mainstream over recent years, the amount of truly innovative music they have collectively produced has been disappointing by comparison. It's not difficult to see why; the original class of 78-82 set the bar high and bequeathed one of the most astonishingly imaginative musical legacies ever - a lavish cross-pollination that embraced punk, disco, dub reggae, funk, glam and krautrock to often dizzying extremes.

The Earth is a Musical Instrument

In 1996, geophysicist Frank Scherbaum teamed up with composer Wolfgang Loos to release "Inner Earth: a seismosonic symphony" (Traumton Records), a recording of natural seismic signals from the earth that Loos creatively rearranged for the CD. The remarkable sounds that are produced - at once electronic and natural - are strange and mesmerizing. As Scherbaum writes, "The fault beats, the volcano whistles and howls, and the Earth rings and hums."
