Abbe May a howlin’ and a moanin’Once night, watching Rockwiz there was this: It was one of those “Who the hell is this? I must hear more.” I couldn’t find more until recently as the artist in question, Abbe May just released her first album titled Howl and Moan. And a fine debut it is. Abby’s blues influence is obvious through the album. Strong blue-based rockers such as the title track and Costanza (see the Rockwiz vid) showcase her powerful voice (you can hear the acknowledged Howlin’ Wolf influence). A Blackout in yourTown, while slower, doesn’t take the foot off the intensity with a burning menace not unlike PJ Harvey. Lay Me Down also has that PJ vibe. To her credit, she doesn’t rely on belting out every song. A country lilt is heard on We’ll take a trip up the country and Ma. And Storm is reminiscent of Harvest era Neil Young (but with better vocals). Howl and Moan is a self-assured debut that if you like the Rockwiz clip, doesn’t disappoint. Abbe wears her influences proudly but they don’t dominate, letting her own voice finds its way to the top. Great to see a young Aussie artist burst out of the blocks so confidently. And to finish, a nice solo version of Storm with Abbe on ukulele. |
